Bodies change. It’s what they do. They grow, they adapt, they move around, they get smaller. Every stage of life sees physical change in a human body: birth, childhood, puberty, adulthood, old age, death…
Some of the changes are seen as positive (a growth spurt in adolescence, for example). While others are viewed more negatively (wrinkling of the skin in later life). One thing they all have in common, though? They’re all perfectly natural.
That goes for penis shrinkage too.
It’s not a nice phrase, is it? ‘Penis shrinkage’. The genitals are often a focal point physically and psychologically for men. Most men will - at one point or another - wonder how they measure up compared to their peers. Penis size can become a worry. Especially when it appears that the penis is actual shortening.
What causes penis shrinkage?
There are many reasons why the male member may shrink temporarily. Temperature and adrenaline being perhaps the two most common causes. But long-term penis shrinkage can be down to any one or more of the following:
- Ageing - Blood flow worsens as a man gets older. Testosterone levels drop too. Both can result in a noticeable shortening of the penis.
- Prostate removal - A ‘prostatectomy’ is the medical name for the surgical removal of the prostate gland. It’s a very common treatment for prostate cancer and can see genital shrinkage in some men (in around 70% of cases, in fact). Often, size does return to normal over time (although not always).
- Injury - Trauma to the area can cause a decrease in penis size.
- Medication - Antidepressants, antipsychotics and steroids are just some of the drugs which have peis shrinkage as a known, proven ad unfortunate side effect.
- Weight gain - Putting on weight doesn’t technically cause the penis to get smaller, but it does appear that way. Extra body fat around the groin area effectively ‘buries’ the base of the shaft, hiding some of the length and giving the very real impression that the size has decreased.
- Smoking - There are many extremely toxic and dangerous chemicals in tobacco, some of which have been medically shown to cause a decrease in manhood size. The reason? The chemicals, again, restrict blood flow to the area.
- Peyronie’s Disease - This disease sees areas of hardened scar tissue (sometimes known as 'plaques') form below the skin of the penis. Eventually, the penis can curve and - in some men - actually shorten.
How can penis shrinkage be avoided?
Can you stop shrinkage? Well, perhaps. But it all depends on its cause. If the reason behind the change in size is medication, weight gain or smoking - it can be reversed. Consult your doctor about a change in lifestyle. You can change your meds, get fitter and/or go on a diet and - of course - stop smoking.
If the root cause is injury, again, seek medical advice. Chances are, however, you’ll just have to let time - and your body - heal. If the shrinkage is age related, well, there’s very little you can do about that. The same goes with if it’s due to removal of your prostate.
If your penis shrinkage is caused by Peyronie’s Disease, however, there are treatments available to you. Traction-based penis enlargement can correct the bend, giving your erection a straighter and longer appearance.
Ultimately, a little shrinkage - while not exactly a welcome change - isn’t serious. In terms of health, at least. So you needn’t concern yourself overly. That said, it’s far from ideal. You may wish to attempt to stimulate long-term blood flow to the area yourself by drinking more water, wearing loose-fitting underwear and keeping fit. And, of course, avoiding too much alcohol and swerving the cigarettes.
If you’re concerned that penis shrinkage has set in, don’t panic. Be sensible. Avoid the pricey pills and creams you see advertised online. They’re overly expensive and simply don’t work.
