Are you circumcised? Don't worry, you don't have to answer that (we won't be able to hear you anyway!). How do you feel about it? Unless it's tied in with a particularly bad memory or a painful complication, most men don't have that strong a feeling about whether they have a foreskin or not. After all, in day-to-day life, what difference does it make?
But just why would you part with your foreskin? As a young – or even slightly older – adult it may be because of a tightening of the foreskin, which can make sex uncomfortable. The procedure can also be something of a family tradition. A lot of people think that circumcised penises are cleaner too because dirt can't get trapped anywhere. It's also, quite incredibly, been proved to lower HIV rates in some studies conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa. The numbers of men diagnosed with (the uncommon) penile cancer is also lower in those chaps that are circumcised. So you can see the thinking behind it...
And of course, they are lots of us here in South Africa who undergo the snip at an early age as a cultural tradition and as something of a rite of passage. Obviously, for those people, you won't have had that much of a choice. The same goes throughout the world with Muslims and Jewish boys circumcised when young as a matter of course. It's a tradition, so it gets done.
There's a common myth that removing the foreskin will impair sexual function and feeling in later life. The thinking is that, without the skin to protect the glans, regular brushing against underwear and bedding and things will cause a lack of sensitivity over time. While that may be true with the flaccid member, tests have shown that cut and uncut men experience the same levels of sexual satisfaction. So that's not something to worry about!
And what do most women think about circumcision? Do they have a preference? Well, that's a tricky one. There's no real open and shut answer, we're afraid. Of course some ladies may prefer one over the other – but on the whole it doesn't make too much of a difference.
